A COMPANY is offering free hot beverages to walkers who voluntarily pick up litter on the South Downs.

Brewster’s Coffee Co recently successfully bid for funds for litter picking equipment from Lewes and Eastbourne Community Safety Partnership.

The coffee company, based at South Hill Barn in Seaford, is now offering a free tea, hot chocolate or Americano coffee to anyone who borrows a litter picker to use during their walk on the South Downs and disposes of the litter.

The weekly initiative is called Free Tea Thursday.

Brewster’s Coffee Co owner Jon Younghusband said the scheme has already resulted in litter picking equipment being donated to a number of community litter picking groups.

Lewes District Council cabinet member for Recycling, Waste and Open Spaces councillor Julie Carr delivered the first batch of equipment to Brewster’s Coffee Co last week with councillor Christine Brett and Neil Peters, Environment First Community Recycling Engagement Officer.

The trio were the first to use the new litter picking equipment during a walk on the South Downs.

Cllr Brett said: “South Hill Barn has become far more popular with visitors since the start of the pandemic and an initiative like this gives them pause for thought on the impact some people are having on the environment.

“This is a fun way to keep this unique area of outstanding natural beauty clean and pleasant for all to enjoy."

Cllr Carr added: “It was a pleasure to meet Jon from Brewster's Coffee Company at South Hill Barn and to support his litter picking initiative by providing some litter picking equipment.

“I for one will certainly be calling by some Thursdays to participate and help to keep the area clean and free from litter, plus to sample his wonderful coffee and cakes."
