IL Divo singer Carlos Marín has died with Covid-19 at the age of 53 - just two weeks after performing in Brighton.

The vocal group took to the stage at the Brighton Centre on December 4.

Four days later, Carlos was reportedly admitted to hospital.

Il Divo announced the 53-year-old had died on Twitter.

"It is with heavy hearts that we are letting you know that our friend and partner, Carlos Marin, has passed away.

"He will be missed by his friends, family and fans. There will never be another voice or spirit like Carlos.

"For 17 years the four of us have been on this incredible journey of Il Divo together, and we will miss our dear friend.

"We hope and pray that his beautiful soul will rest in peace. With Love -- David, Sebastien and Urs."

The remainder of the groups UK Christmas tour has been postponed.

Fans were quick to share their sadness and memories on social media.

One fan said: “OMG I can't believe this sad news, myself and @mrsseags were only at Brighton on Sat 4th December watching their amazing show and Carlos being his usual charismatic self.

“Our thoughts are with his personal family and his work family at this very sad time.”

The male quartet was brought together by Simon Cowell in 2003 and achieved three UK number one albums.

Carlos was born in Germany, but moved to Spain at the age of 12 and was a baritone in the group, performing alongside tenors Urs Buhler and David Miller, as well as pop singer Sebastien Izambard.

Spanish newspaper El Pais reported Carlos had been taken ill during the UK tour and placed into an induced coma at a hospital in Manchester.

Il Divo’s hits included Regresa a Mi (Unbreak My Heart), The Time Of Our Lives, and I Believe In You - a duet with Celine Dion - as well as a version of Adele's Hello.

They have sold more than 30 million records, and had 160 gold and platinum discs across more than 33 countries, the group's website said.
