BRIGHTON has been named the most studious place in the UK.

According to research by language learning app Busuu, Brighton and Edinburgh studied the hardest in the past year compared to the rest of the country.

Language learners in both cities, which ranked joint first in the annual UK Language Learning Report, completed an average of 34 exercises on the app each week.

Brighton and Edinburgh were followed by Bournemouth, Newcastle and Southampton.

Director of learning design at Busuu Federico Espinosa said: “It's so wonderful to see our learners actively putting their time into something that really benefits them – whether they’re learning for work, school, travel, family or fun.

“I hope that the world reopening in 2021 has helped motivate them to reach their language goals. Now more than ever, our learners owe it to themselves to celebrate their progress and dream big for 2022.”

The top ten most studious places in the UK in 2021 are below, according to the report:

= 1. Brighton

=1. Edinburgh

3. Bournemouth

= 4. Newcastle upon Tyne

= 4. Southampton

6. Stoke-on-Trent

= 7. Belfast

= 7. Portsmouth

9. Glasgow

10. Cardiff

However, the data revealed that not all areas of the UK were so studious in the past 12 months.

London ranked bottom of the list, with those in the city completing an average of 17 exercises per week. App users in Manchester and Birmingham were also near the bottom of the list.

The report also revealed that those learning Japanese were the most active leaners, which Federico believes is largely down to recent interest in the Tokyo Olympics.

Overall, English was the most learnt language in 2021 – overtaking last year’s most chosen language, Spanish.
