PRIDE organisers have announced the theme for this year’s event after a forced two year hiatus due to coronavirus.

The festival is set to return in style this year with revellers urged to support the love, protest and unity theme.

This will celebrate the movements roots in protest and its continued fight for human rights across the globe.

The annual event usually attracts tens of thousands of people to Brighton and Hove and the city’s streets are filled with huge crowds.

Global singing stars including Mariah Carey and the Pussycat Dolls were set to play in Preston Park in 2021 for the 30th anniversary of the event.

Party-goers were encouraged to follow the theme of Fabuloso.

But they were left devastated when the celebrations were put on hold because of the coronavirus crisis.

In May last year, organisers announced that the festival was to be cancelled for a second year in a row due to the uncertainty over mass gatherings.

Pride was just one of many major events across the globe to be halted by the pandemic.

A Pride spokesman said: “After two years of not being able to celebrate Pride in our city, we are excited to announce the theme for the (delayed) 30th anniversary Brighton and Hove Pride LGBTQ+ Community Parade 2022 on Saturday, August 6 will be Love, Protest and Unity and applications are now open.

“Our theme was created after positive feedback from community groups and to embrace our continued campaign aims.

“The Pride LGBTQ+ Community Parade is one of the undisputed highlights of the Brighton & Hove Pride weekend and is a glorious showcase of the city’s charities, community groups and small businesses as well as our invaluable emergency services, the NHS and statutory partners.”

In the past six years, Brighton and Hove Pride has raised more than £920,000 for community good causes thanks to the support of businesses, sponsors and people who buy tickets for the Pride Festival in Preston Park and Pride Village Party.

It has supported hundreds of community organisations with grants through the Brighton Rainbow Fund, Pride Social Impact Fund and Pride Cultural Development Fund.
