A STUDY has found the most "vegan friendly" cities in the UK this Veganuary.

The research carried out by Student Beans found Brighton to be joint fourth in the country for having one of the highest amounts of vegan options.

It analysed the number of restaurants serving vegan food, the percentage of restaurants in the city that are vegan, the number of vegan Uber Eats, the average cost of vegetables and fruit and the number of health food stores in each city within a five-mile radius.

To make the study fair, each value was calculated per capita, based on the population.

Brighton comes in joint fourth in the UK - along with Glasgow, Newcastle, and Cambridge - for having 71 vegan options on Uber Eats and 383 vegan friendly restaurants.

However, the lack of health food and supplement shops in the city, 11, and the higher average cost for fruit and vegetables (£16.70) mean that Brighton has missed out on the top three spots for the most vegan-friendly cities.

Edinburgh took the crown and has been ranked as the best city for vegans in the UK.

Plant-based eaters will not be short of options in this city with 642 vegan restaurants and 42 Uber Eats options delivering vegan food.

Chester is the second-best city with 135 vegan eat-in restaurants available, the city missed out on the top spot due to only having nine plant-based Uber Eats options.

The study places Nottingham in third place thanks to its high percentage of vegan-friendly restaurants.

It has 19 vegan options on Uber Eats and the 13 of health food shops in the city means that Nottingham has missed out on the top two spots.

The average basket spend for fruit and vegetables is slightly higher compared to Edinburgh and Chester.

According to Plant Based News, 1.5 million people in the UK are following a vegan diet for the benefit of the planet and our own health.

Demand for vegan options in restaurants is currently up 175 per cent, as more people make the change to plant-based.

When travelling to Northern Ireland, Newry, Armagh, and Derry all lack vegan options, housing no plant-based UberEats delivery services at all - making Newry the worst in the UK for vegan options.

London also fell surprisingly low the city's costly £18.10 average basket spend for fruit and vegetables is a major contributing factor as to why it is the tenth worst city in the UK for vegans.
