BRIGHTON and Hove reported almost 1,000 cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, official figures show.

A total of 58,547 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 in Brighton and Hove.

When the UK coronavirus daily dashboard was updated on January 7, it showed an increase of 956 from Thursday.

However, there were no new coronavirus deaths recorded in the latest 24-hour period in Brighton and Hove.

The rate of infection in Brighton and Hove now stands at 20,068 cases per 100,000 people, lower than the England average of 21,235.

Elsewhere in Sussex, 272 further cases were reported in Hastings, with 356 in Eastbourne, 303 in Worthing, 400 in Crawley and 255 in Chichester.

Across the UK, the number of recorded cases increased by 178,163 over the period, to 14,193,228.

The dashboard shows 429 people had died in Brighton and Hove by January 7 – which was unchanged from Thursday.

It means there have been two deaths in the past week, which is the same as the previous week.

The figures include anyone who died within 28 days of a positive test result for Covid-19, and whose usual residence was in Brighton and Hove.

They were among 19,269 deaths recorded across the South East.

Daily death counts are revised each day, with each case backdated to the actual date of death, so some areas might see their figures revised down.

The figures also show that more than two-thirds of people in Brighton and Hove have received two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

The latest figures show 201,028 people had received both jabs by January 6 (Thursday) – 69 per cent of those aged 12 and over, based on the number of people on the National Immunisation Management Service database.

Across England, 83 per cent of people aged 12 and above had received a second dose of the jab.

Unlike at local level, the national rate was calculated using mid-2020 population estimates from the Office for National Statistics.
