AN MP has hit out at the Prime Minister over allegations that he attended a lockdown party in 2020.

Caroline Lucas has branded Boris Johnson as a "serial coward" after he failed to attend parliament today to answer questions about his possible attendance at a party on May 20, 2020.

More than 100 people are thought to have been invited to the "bring-your-own-bottle" party in the Downing Street garden, including the PM and Carrie Symmonds.

At the time, England was only just emerging from a national lockdown and people were still banned from meeting more than one other person outside.

Ms Lucas, the MP for Brighton Pavilion, said online: "As well as being a serial liar, the PM is a serial coward as well.

"He can’t even bring himself to come to the chamber to give a reply to the urgent question.

"Ministers should stop acting as his human shield and stop hiding behind the Sue Gray Inquiry."

The Labour Party were granted time to ask an urgent question in today's commons debate.

It was granted after accusations the Prime Minister's principal private secretary Martin Reynolds sent an email invite to a party to more than 100 Downing Street Staff during the first lockdown.

A copy of the invitation was shared with ITV news last night.

In it, the close ally of Mr Johnson said: "Hi all, after what has been an incredibly busy period we thought it would be nice to make the most of the lovely weather and have some socially distanced drinks in the No10 garden this evening.

"Please join us from 6pm and bring your own booze!"

Ms Lucas urged police to investigate the allegation when the news broke.

She said: "I’ve run out of words to describe level of outrage which this represents.

"When families were separated, loved ones dying alone, when others allowed to meet only one other person outside, PM and his government were partying - police must urgently investigate."

Last night, the Met police said they were “in contact” with the Cabinet Office over reports of the event.
