DRIVERS and football fans are being warned of potential delays due to a road closure on the A27.

The westbound carriageway between the Ashcombe roundabout, Lewes and the Carden Avenue junction in Hollingbury, Brighton will be closed from 8pm tomorrow to 6am on Wednesday.

National Highways says the closure will start after traffic levels have reduced following Albion’s match against Chelsea at The Amex tomorrow.

The game is due to kick off at 8pm and finish shortly before 10pm, meaning delays could be possible along diversion routes.

Diversions will be in place during the closure via the A26, B2109, A259 and A23.

The agency said narrow lanes will allow work to safely take place along the central reservation.

A second closure is due to take place from 8pm on Thursday to 6am on Friday, along the eastbound A27 between the Patcham junction and the Falmer junction.

A statement from National Highways said: "We’re carrying out repairs and maintenance to the drainage on the A27 Falmer and A270 Lewes Road.

"These improvements are essential for the safety of road users.

"We’ll carry out the work in stages and, for the everyone’s safety, there will be temporary traffic management in place around the A27 junctions with the A270 and B2123 at Falmer while we complete the work.

"During events at the Amex Stadium, we’ll start closures after traffic levels have reduced."
