A POPULAR seafront venue is to continue running as a hotel, nightclub and bar after being sold to new owners.

Legends in Marine Parade, Brighton was sold last week by owner Tony Chapman, almost 30 years after he bought the seafront property.

The Charm Group, who own The Charm and Sea Spray hotels in New Steine, bought the venue for £5 million and have offered the lease to the venue’s existing operators.

In a joint statement, the group and lease holders Polly Peck Brighton Limited, said they have “exciting investment plans”, including renovations and menu changes.

It read: “Work has already started and coming up will be a complete refresh of the main bar, reception, a new nightclub floor and stairs plus upgrades to various hotel rooms.

“A new website will be launched shortly, and plans are afoot to rejuvenate the food offering and really showcase how good their chef is, with nearly 40 years’ experience of creating delicious hearty meals.

“The hospitality industry has endured an extremely tough period since the pandemic broke but there is now a genuine optimism about the future which both the owners and their tenants have recognised in their investment in your Legends Brighton.”

The venue, which boasts a hotel, bar, outside terrace, and downstairs nightclub, has been one of the main focal points of the gay scene in the city.

Following the sale, previous owner Tony said he will miss the business but that it is time to “slow down.”

Tony, who previously owned Club Revenge in Old Steine, said: “It’s sad that I’m giving it up, but it’s time. Every business I’ve had, I have started from scratch.

“They started as run-down places, like Club Revenge was when I took it over more than 30 years ago and developed it into a place that became famous right across the UK.

“Legends has now turned into the main gay business in Brighton. We have a nightclub in the basement and a bar with a lovely terrace and now a 40-bedroom hotel.

“It became a beautiful business, but you can’t stay there forever, and you have to move on.”
