A CANDELIGHT vigil for a murdered primary school teacher is to take place in the city centre.

People are expected to gather at The Level in Brighton at 5.30pm tonight to remember 23-year-old Ashling Murphy.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lights, candles or torches and wear face coverings and maintain social distancing.

The event will call for a change in tackling gender-based violence.

A spokeswoman for the event said: “A vigil will be held in memory of Ashling Murphy this Wednesday, January 19 at 5.30-6.30pm at The Level, Brighton.

“We ask all attendees to please wear a face mask and maintain social distancing.

“Feel free to bring candles, flowers and placards.”

Vigils have taken place across in Ms Murphy’s home county of Offaly in Ireland and in Cork, Belfast and London.

Ms Murphy’s family attended a candlelit vigil near the murder scene on Friday evening.

At the event, her father Ray Murphy paid a poignant tribute to the talented young musician by performing her favourite song on the banjo.

He broke down in tears while playing the final chords of When You Were Sweet Sixteen.

Mr Murphy, along with his wife Kathleen and daughter Amy, walked on the opposite side of the canal to where his daughter was assaulted and died on Wednesday.

This morning, Irish police confirmed they had arrested a second man in the investigation into her death.

Another man remains in custody on suspicion of murdering Ms Murphy.

Garda said that the second man, aged in his 30s, has been arrested and is being questioned in relation to the potential withholding of information.

Her was found dead after going for a run on the banks of the Grand Canal in Tullamore, Co Offaly.

Large crowds gathered in the village of Mountbolus and outside St Brigid’s Church, where her funeral was held on Tuesday.

Mourners included Irish president Michael D Higgins and Irish premier Micheal Martin.
