HUNDREDS of vehicles are set to hit the road when an electric rally returns later this year.

Bikes, cars, vans and scooters will roll into the city on Saturday, June 25, as The London to Brighton Electric Vehicle Rally returns for the second time.

Last year, a total of 71 vehicles in nine different categories crossed the finish line next to the Palace Pier, having driven 59 miles from Parliament Square to Brighton.

More than 3,000 people visited the event on Madeira Drive, where vehicles were displayed following the finish.

Now, hundreds are expected to take part in the run which celebrates the rapid development of electric vehicles and renewable energy technology.

Tony Hayes, who won the most innovative vehicle award in the JLC Orca Van during the event last year, said he was "excited" to take part again.

He said: "We're really excited and we've got two new vehicles.

"It is a good event, it was really good fun last year.

"It was lovely, everyone was waiting down here [Medeira Drive] with a bit of sunshine - it was stunning.

"For us, it puts us in the right spotlight and that is good for us."

The inaugural event was the brainchild of co-founders Tom Druitt and Bill Murray and marked the transition of Big Lemon's fleet to electric.

The drive featured A-list participants, including actor Mark Williams, who crossed the finish line in a brand-new Polestar electric vehicle supplied by Endeavour Motors.

While engineer Cedric Lynch crossed the line in a self-built motorcycle created in the 1970s, which once featured on Tomorrow’s World on the BBC.

The event finished with an Awards Ceremony at The Grand, with awards for the lowest energy consumption in each class.
