MOTORISTS faced more delays on the A27 this evening with maintenance work causing a lane on both sides of the carriageway to be closed.

The delays were caused delays of around 20 minutes westbound on the A27 between the Ashcombe roundabout and the A27 Falmer Hill due to one lane being closed until around 6.30pm.

There were also delays back towards Hollingbury on the eastbound side of the road.

The works are set to continue for another 23 days until February 17 while National Highways conduct drainage repairs on the central reservation by Falmer.

National Highways said it understands the “disruptive” nature of the works but said they are needed for worker safety for “essential work” on drainage.

A South East Highways spokesman said: “We need to remove the safety barriers in the central reservation to access and repair the drainage system and we cannot have the road fully open without these barriers in place in case there is an incident.

“We’ll be working around the clock to get this work done as quickly as we can as we know how much closures can impact journeys.”

The authority advised to plan extra time for journeys in the morning and evening.
