THE COUNCIL is urging motorists to “plan an alternative route” following a city centre manhole fire.

A number of buildings were evacuated, and a 30-metre cordon was put in place while fire crews attempted to extinguish an electrical fire in Kings Road, Brighton.

Emergency services were first called to the scene on Tuesday night after fire was seen emerging from a manhole.

Work was carried out to isolate utility gas which continued to burn through the night, before the A259 reopened on Wednesday morning.

However, Brighton and Hove City Council are still urging motorists to find an alternative route if travelling in the area.

“East Sussex Fire and Rescue, Sussex Police and city council staff remain in attendance, supporting residents, directing traffic and in contact with utility providers,” a council spokesman said.

“If you normally travel along Kings Road in the morning, we suggest you plan an alternative route to give yourself extra time, just in case the cordons remain in place.”
