THE search is on for a man caught on CCTV in connection with a burglary at a city centre salon.

Simply Urban in Gardner Street, Brighton, had their front door broken and had several items stolen on Wednesday evening, including a tablet, an iPod and speakers, as well as around £40 from a cash drawer.

Footage from CCTV cameras around the salon show a man walking through the building with a bag slung over his shoulder at around 9.30pm on January 26.

One of the owners of the salon, Kyriakos Baxevanis, said he felt "disappointment and shocked" after finding out about the burglary.

He said: "It's a very busy street and I'm sure there would have been people outside at the time, so it's the brazen confidence of coming in that was the most shocking thing - that it could happen at any time."

Kyriakos said it wasn't until the following day, when staff came to the premises and found items missing and part of the door frame broken that they found out what had happened.

He also said footage from the salon also showed the man attempting to gain entry into flats in the building.

He is hopeful that the CCTV footage will help identify the man, and said that they have received a lot of support from the local community in the wake of the burglary.

"We've been trading for the last 14 years and a lot of people found out about the burglary through our social media. We've had a lot of encouragement from our customers, our friends and family.

"It's lovely when the community comes together when people need it, and it's part of being in Brighton and why the city is so special."

Kyriakos said the police have been very helpful, with forensic teams attending the scene yesterday dusting for fingerprints to help in the investigation.

He urged anyone with information that might identify the man to contact the police.

It is not the first time that the company has been burgled, with the salon having items stolen in an incident roughly ten years ago in another premises also on Gardner Street.

A police spokesman said: "A report was received on Thursday morning of a break-in overnight, understood to have taken place at around 9.30pm.

"A number of electrical items and cash worth several hundred pounds were stolen.

"An investigation is underway and officers would like to speak with anybody who recognises this man or witnesses anything suspicious around that time."

People with information are urged to contact police online or by calling 101, quoting serial 383 of 27/01.
