PEOPLE and businesses are angry that the “busiest bandstand in the United Kingdom” could be closed for the rest of the year.

Eastbourne bandstand has been closed for essential repairs since the beginning of the year and will remain closed for maintenance throughout 2022.

The landmark, which hosts live performances for audiences of more than 1,000 people, has been closed throughout the coronavirus pandemic with three shows cancelled at the beginning of the year.

Now, people in the town are concerned that the closures will affect tourism and the loss of revenue will cause it to fall into disrepair.

A “save our bandstand” petition aimed at Eastbourne Borough Council has now received more than 1,000 signatures.

It reads: “This building, that has been used in numerous television programmes and films is not going to open this year for the 140-150 shows it usually hosts per year, bringing much needed tourists and revenue to this town.

“Is the writing on the wall and will it be allowed to deteriorate further and never open again?

“We need the local authority to be more transparent in its dealings around the restoration and repair of our Bandstand and tell us why it was allowed to get into this state of ruin and if it’s actually possible to fund this project adequately to bring it back to its former glory.”

A spokesman for the bandstand confirmed that it will not be opening for its outdoor concern season in April and that indoor shows will instead take place as the Welcome Building in Compton Street. until the works are complete.

A council spokesman said: “Subject to cabinet approval in February, we will soon begin a £750,000 project to repair the stage area and parts of the main structure.

“We have been very clear that a temporary closure is required during this time.

“We look forward to welcoming audiences back to the bandstand when this essential work is completed.

“Bandstand shows are continuing at the Welcome Building and proving extremely popular with residents and visitors to the town.”
