THE FINAL pieces of the Lewes Road footbridge have been put in place.

Six panels and two large steel beams were lowered in by crane over the weekend, causing public transport disruptions and road closures in the area.

Surface, lighting, and finishing works have been continuing on the walkway today.

The 30-metre structure is the last piece of the University of Brighton’s Big Build project to “provide a simple, fast, and safe link for communities on either side of Lewes Road.”

Crowds lined the road between Coombe Road and north of Natal Road on Saturday, January 29 and Sunday, January 30.

Photographs taken around midday show how work on the bridge is coming along.

Professor Debra Humphris, vice-chancellor of the University of Brighton, said: “The Big Build has already transformed our Moulsecoomb campus and breathed new life into this part of the city.

“I look forward to its opening in a few months and hope many of our neighbours, as well as our staff and students, will make use of it.”

The bridge is set for a Spring 2022 opening.
