POLICE are searching for a pedestrian who was nearly hit by a car which mounted the pavement during a police chase.

Officers traced a Volkswagon Golf car which had been reported stolen from outside a house in Withdean Road, Brighton, on Thursday, February 3.

During the pursuit, the driver mounted the pavement and almost hit a man walking in New Road, Worthing, before driving off at speed.

The car then crashed into a lamp post and another vehicle in Romany Road, Durrington, before the driver abandoned it and ran off.

After a short foot chase, he was caught and arrested on suspicion of theft of the car.

The man, aged 20, was taken to custody and further arrested on suspicion of burglary, dangerous driving and failing to stop after a collision.

He currently remains in custody.

Police Constable Jack Lyons, of Sussex Police Specialist Enforcement Unit, said: "As part of our enquiries, we are keen to trace the male pedestrian who was nearly hit by the vehicle in New Road and ask that he gets in touch with us or if anyone knows who he is please come forward."
