A FORMER Navy pilot has become an apprentice bus driver, at 65 years of age.

Ralph Turtle, from Worthing, began a career in the Navy before joining commercial airline Flybe for 30 years, which collapsed before the pandemic.

Now, Ralph is back in the driving seat, as he undertakes the Passenger Transport Bus Driver Level Two Apprenticeship.

“I love any mode of transport and meeting different people, so driving buses is the perfect job for me,” said Ralph.

“To some people, it may seem a little strange starting an apprenticeship and a new career at the age of 65, but I’ve always been someone who loves to learn around my job.”

Following Flybe’s collapse, the former pilot briefly worked in Tesco, but a love for transport took over and he enrolled onto the apprenticeship, which he is due to complete this summer.

“We are fortunate to have some varied and lovely bus routes in and around Worthing and the people make it an extremely satisfying job," added Ralph.
