A SUSPECT has been arrested at an airport while trying to "flee" following a serious assault involving weapons.

Police made the arrest at Gatwick Airport in the early hours of Sunday, February 13.

It comes after an incident which took place in another part of the country.

It is not known where the serious assault occured, or how many people were involved.

Gatwick Police has been approached for further information.

It comes as police at the airport experienced a "busy" Sunday, making two further arrests, including a suspect who “smelled strongly of cannabis” and was subsequently arrested for possession of an offensive weapon.

Airport police also worked in conjunction with Norfolk Constabulary yesterday to arrest one inbound passenger who was wanted for offences.

Prior to the pandemic, Gatwick Airport, Crawley, saw an average of over 127,000 passengers a day pass through its doors.

Yesterday, upwards of 60,000 passengers through the airport, according to Gatwick Police.
