THE RNLI has been given a boost as a new inshore lifeboat is approved.

Newhaven RNLI will now operate a D-class inshore lifeboat (ILB) to work alongside its current all-weather Severn class vessel.

The new, smaller boat is better equipped to tackle shallow water rescue than the current fleet, and will run on a two-year trial to assess the need for a permanent ILB at Newhaven.

Phill Corsi, area lifesaving manager for the Sussex coast from Shoreham to Hastings, said: “This is a hugely exciting development for Newhaven RNLI. I believe that the trial inshore lifeboat will bring real benefits to those in need of rescue.”

At present, when responding to shallow water calls, the large Severn class uses its smaller Y-class boat to complete the final stages of the rescue.

Lewis Arnold, Newhaven coxswain and mechanic, said: “Maintaining both lifeboats in Newhaven will help us respond more efficiently to the specific nature of each shout.

“Ultimately, we aim to provide the most effective service to our community that we are able, and save more lives at sea.”
