A BUS had to be evacuated, and a man has been detained, following an incident in the city centre.

Police were called at 2pm following concerns for the welfare of a man on a bus near Brighton Palace Pier.

The bus was evacuated and Western Road, Brighton was closed while officers engaged with the man and established the circumstances.

Officers say the man got off the bus voluntarily at around 2.30pm and was taken into police custody.

Sussex Police said the man was detained under the Mental Health Act.

A spokesman for the force said: “Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances, but there is not believed to be any wider risk to the public.”

An eyewitness in North Street said there were dozens of officers, including armed police, and eight police cars stationed along the busy road.

Brighton and Hove Buses said that due to an “incident” at Imperial Arcade, it was diverting several its services, however they have all since returned to normal.
