AN ELDERLY man’s hopes for a Christmas lunch were fulfilled by selfless staff.

Brighton Housing Trust (BHT) Sussex held a Christmas lunch at First Base, a resource centre run by the charity for rough sleepers in Brighton and Hove, last December.

One man was unable to attend the meal, leaving him facing the prospect of a festive season without his traditional turkey.

Debbie Piper, deputy manager at First Base, said: “We like to go the extra mile.

“When one 76-year-old client missed our Christmas meal and told us that was his only chance of eating a turkey roast dinner, we agreed to cook another a week later, which he really enjoyed and was extremely grateful for.

“Our dedicated staff team ensured that people who were facing homelessness over the Christmas period could continue to access our support, at a time that is particularly difficult for many.”

It comes as BHT Sussex beat their festive fundraising target, raising over £30,000 for First Base, despite their annual street fundraiser being cancelled.
