CONGESTION is causing a number of delays along the A27 this morning.

Traffic going westbound is seeing delays of around ten minutes with just under two miles of traffic between Selmeston and Firle near Lewes.

There are also delays of 30 minutes from the Ashcombe roundabout by Lewes all the way to Falmer along with growing queues of over two miles.

The delays by Lewes were due to planned maintenance work from National Highways on drainage in the central reservation. The authority closed one lane on both sides of the A27 from January 19, with work finishing yesterday.

National Highways will be closing the westbound A27 between Lewes and Hollingbury between 8pm and 6am tonight and Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the A27 will be closed eastbound from the Patcham junction and Falmer between 8pm and 6am on Thursday and Friday this week.

A spokesman said: “We’ve almost finished our work in the central reservation and are preparing to remove the lane closures on both sides of the carriageway.

“As we needed to remove the safety barriers in the central reservation to access and repair the drainage system, these lane closures were essential to help keep us and everyone using the A27 safe.

“We’ll need to close the road for two nights in each direction to remove the traffic management.

“Please note these will be day later than we originally planned due to unforeseen issues while working on the drainage system.

“By taking an extra day, it means we can complete the work now and will not need to go back and cause further disruption for everyone using the road during the day.”

The current diversion route is via the A23 London Road, on to the A259 along the coast and back up the A26 where you can connect back on to the A27.

The road will be open as usual for the match at the Amex Stadium on 19 February.
