FALLEN trees are causing major railway disruptions.

A 50mph speed restriction has been implemented on Southern Rail trains due to the high winds.

“The speed restrictions will mean trains will be delayed during their journey so short notice cancellations may be possible,” a Southern Rail spokeswoman said.

Near Gatwick Airport, a tree which has fallen on the overheard wires is causing “heavy disruption” to trains into the airport from London and the south coast.

“Please leave more time for your journey,” a Gatwick Airport spokesman said.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for “very strong and disruptive” winds which could cause widespread chaos.

All train users are being urged to check their route before they travel.

Fewer Thameslink trains will run between Brighton, Gatwick Airport, Redhill and London on Friday.

Thameslink trains will only run to and from London Blackfriars, while Southern services will continue to run but may be delayed during their journey.

Passengers are being advised to not travel on Thameslink and Great Northern routes north of London on Friday, with most train companies anticipating significant disruption.

“High winds are forecast meaning 50mph speed restrictions will be in place across most of the network during the day,” the Southern Rail spokeswoman added.

Southern Rail tickets are available to use with other train operators.

“You should be aware that this national weather event means disruption to other operators services is highly likely too,” the spokeswoman added.

Thameslink only ticket holders can use Southern services where there is no Thameslink service available and Southeastern between Dartford and London, and between Hastings and London.
