TRAIN companies are urging people not to travel for the second time in a week as another named storm batters Sussex.

A yellow weather warning is in place for the south coast until 1pm today as Storm Franklin hits Sussex with gusts of up to 70mph in coastal and exposed areas.

The Met Office has warned of some damage to buildings, injuries from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, and the potential for power outages.

Southern Rail and Thameslink have urged commuters not to travel on their networks south of London today.

The companies warned that trees and objects are likely to be blown onto train lines and, "in most areas, no service may be able to run".

Replacement transport will not be able to run due to the weather conditions, and a speed restriction of 50mph is in place across their networks.

Southern services between Littlehampton and Portsmouth will run only between Littlehampton and Bognor Regis, and services remain suspended between Three Bridges, Brighton and Lewes due to a nine-day closure for major engineering work.

A passenger ferry service from Newhaven to Dieppe was cancelled late last night, but a departure from Newhaven is still due to leave port at 10am this morning.

Meanwhile, Gatwick Airport saw its runway lights knocked out for nearly 20 minutes by the weather yesterday evening, with some delays and cancellations because of the high winds.

Storm Franklin is the third named storm to hit the UK over the course of a week, with many people and businesses still repairing damage caused by Storm Eunice on Friday.

And another storm may be on the way, with windy conditions expected on Thursday could end up being named Storm Gladys.
