PARENTS have backed schools on using the term “grown-ups” instead of “mum and dad”.
St Luke's Primary School, Elm Grove Primary School, Carlton Hill Primary School and Saltdean Primary were revealed to have scrapped the words to avoid discriminating against "non-traditional" families.
Many Argus readers backed the schools’ edict, which outlines the language staff should use to ensure pupils raised in diverse families are not stigmatised.
Vicki May said: “Bereaved kids, grandparent raised kids, kids in care, kids with one parent, kids with two parents of the same gender, kids in blended families, kids being raised by older siblings.

“To be honest, it is actually easier and more practical to say grown-ups. Really can’t see what all the fuss is about.”
While reader Chrissy Sanders-Browning said: “ Not every child has a mum or dad. Some of them don't even have either.
“Grown-ups is just a more child-friendly version of ‘guardian’, which is just anyone looking after the kids.”
Kirsty Chapman said she thinks the term teaches people to be “mindful” of different family backgrounds.
She said: “I think we should be using the term grown-ups when talking to children that we do not know
We should be mindful that not everyone lives with their biological mum and dad.”
