HOW refreshing to see a non-sycophantic, non-cap-doffing piece in mainstream publishing which questions the wisdom of the Royal Family continuing as such after the death of our current queen.
This has been an anomaly of our society for far too long.
Why, for instance do we not have a written constitution, and remain subjects rather than citizens? Surely in a mature democracy this is anachronistic.
Ivor Gaber makes a pertinent linkage to our non-elected House of Lords, too often used for political patronage or bestowed through inheritance.
It is abhorrent that so much of the common wealth, ie our land and money, has been hived off to a family who have no special qualities to bestow.
If we need a presidential figure then let the electorate decide who possesses the qualities we need, and let any citizen be eligible.
With the monies released from this excessively expensive royal indulgence I believe we will indeed have an "oven-ready" solution to the issues that our citizens actually need, such as properly funded public services.
