PLANS to build ten further Travelodge hotels have been welcomed by MPs.

The hotel chain has announced plans to bring another ten hotels to Sussex, including in central Brighton, despite currently running a branch in West Street.

The introduction of additional sites could assist an area’s tourism economy in bouncing back from the pandemic.

Plans have been praised by two Members of Parliament, including Lewes and Newhaven Conservative MP, Maria Caulfield.

“I welcome the plans to open new sites in Newhaven and Lewes,” said Ms Caulfield.

“Newhaven in particular is a port town, and very often visitors on the ferry have to travel to Brighton or Eastbourne to stay because of the lack of accommodation in the town.

“With Brighton and Hove Albion being a Premier League club, having nearby accommodation where away-fans can stay and catch the bus or the train to matches is something we badly need, and would bring much needed spending into our local economy.”

The sites in Sussex listed for new Travelodge hotels are:

  • Bexhill
  • Bognor Regis
  • Brighton
  • Chichester
  • Eastbourne
  • Haywards Heath
  • Hove
  • Lewes
  • Newhaven/Seaford
  • Shoreham

The plans come as Travelodge opened over 80 new hotels in the previous five years, 17 of which came in 2021.

Mims Davies, Conservative MP for Mid-Sussex, also offered her support when asked about plans for a Travelodge in Haywards Heath, saying the need for accommodation far outweighs the current supply.

“I am often approached by businesses who have a regular and fairly significant demand for hotel accommodation in the Mid Sussex area,” said Ms Davies.

“As well as those perhaps holding weddings or christenings who need extra bed space at an affordable price for all pockets.

“Whilst we do have some excellent independent hotels locally, the demand outstrips the capacity and businesses must place their staff and customers much further afield – often in accommodation too far away in reality, such as in Brighton or Crawley. “Hotels to cater for all budgets are greatly needed in Mid Sussex and I am pleased this unmet demand has been recognised for this area and welcome further investments in overnight accommodation.”

A spokeswoman for Travelodge said: “When we open a new Travelodge hotel, it is good news for the local economy.

“Research shows on average, Travelodge customers will spend double their room rate with local businesses during their stay which can equate to an annual multi-million-pound boost for the local economy.

“"Our UK development target list is created from extensive independent research which highlights key locations where there is high consumer demand for good quality and great value accommodation. Sussex is one of these target locations and we are actively looking for suitable opportunities.”
