FIRE crews were called to reports of a “flat filled with smoke” this afternoon.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) sent four fire engines to a flat in Montpelier Road in Brighton after being called to reports of a “room full of smoke” shortly after 2.00pm.

Police and an ambulance also attended the scene and the road was briefly closed.

However, the fire had been put out by the people who lived in the house before fire crews arrived.

A spokeswoman for ESFRS said: “We were called to a residential property on Montpelier Road to reports of a flat filled with smoke.

“We had four fire engines at the scene at 2.04pm, the fire was extinguished before arrival by the residents.”
