A Brighton domestic abuse charity has chosen this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) to launch its new fundraising campaign.

If Refuge, Information, Support and Education project (RISE) can raise £25,000 in one week it will receive matching funding from the Government.

A spokeswoman for RISE, an independent, Brighton-based registered charity that helps people affected by domestic abuse, said the funding will help it to sustain and develop its vital services in Brighton and Hove and across Sussex, and support the charity to provide women-centred counselling services, assertive outreach, recovery groups and peer support.

“Women survivors of domestic violence and abuse and their children will be helped through their recovery journey moving on to be safer, more confident, and able to thrive,” said the spokeswoman.

The charity offers practical help ranging from direct advice to refuge accommodation for those whose lives are at risk.

Pledges up to £25,000 will be matched by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports’ Tampon Tax Fund during the campaign, enabling all money raised to support twice as many survivors’ of domestic abuse.

“RISE services cost £4,000 per day to run, so the impact that this funding would have for women and girls affected by domestic abuse is significant,” added the spokeswoman.

The online campaign pledge will be live for just one week, from 12pm on March 8 to 12pm on March 15.

All pledges must be made during this time in order for the charity to reach the target and receive the match funding. IWD, which this year took place on March 8, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality, while the RISE fundraising initiative is part of The Big Give Women and Girls Match Fund 2022, which campaigns for charities that are working to improve the lives of vulnerable, disadvantaged or underrepresented women and girls in England and Scotland.
