MARIA Caulfield is “not going to defend the obstacles being put in people’s way” as they flee the war in Ukraine.

The Conservative MP for Lewes said she is “frustrated” by the government's approach which “reflects badly on us as a country".

So far, the UK has granted visas to 300 Ukrainian refugees under its new scheme, the Home Office said.

It added that 17,700 applications to re-join relatives had been started, while about 600 refugees are stuck in Calais, with many saying they were turned away due to a lack of paperwork.

The government came under fire for only allowing Ukrainians 12-month visas but extended this to three years.

However, it has been accused of not doing enough compared with countries in the EU such as Ireland, which has adopted a visa-free approach for Ukrainian refugees.

Maria Caulfield said in a message to her constituents: "A number of you have contacted me about the refugee situation in Ukraine and in neighbouring countries. My team have been working night and day to get people out and most of those we have been helping have got to the UK.

“I am as frustrated as you by how difficult it is and I’m not going to defend the obstacles being put in people's way as they flee war. As experienced caseworkers, my team have struggled to get people through the system.

"I have left ministers in no doubt as to how unacceptable this is and that urgent changes are needed. This was also said in the House of Commons yesterday.

“The UK can be proud of the military help, the financial support and the sanctions we have imposed on Russia. It is all helping Ukraine as acknowledged by President Zelensky yesterday but our effort in helping those fleeing from war reflects badly on us as a country.

“Please be assured that this is being raised at the highest level and if you have details of anyone trying to get to the UK please do email me as the team are able to help people get through and come to the UK."
