A COLLEGE is offering two paid placements for Ukrainian refugees.

Alternative education provider, Self Managed Learning College (SML College) in Brighton is offering the placements to refugees fleeing the conflict in Ukraine.

The two positions are worth £4,500 per year each.

Like many people across Brighton and Hove, the governors, staff and students at SML College said they have been “incredibly moved” by the situation unfolding in Ukraine and are keen to help out in any way possible.

As well as donating to a refugee charity, the college is offering two Ukrainian refugee children a place at the college, which prides itself on being a safe, supportive and welcoming community for people from all backgrounds.

Dr Ian Cunningham, chairman of governors said: “Although education may be the furthest from their minds right now, we want to extend an invitation to children affected by the crisis so that when they feel ready to, they are able to do so in a small-scale environment that focuses on nurturing children as individuals.

“The needs of Ukrainian refugee children may be different as they adapt to life in a different country and we provide more individualised learning based on the needs of the child and what they wish to learn.”

The college provides educational programmes for young people aged 9-17 years old and has been providing SML programmes in the Brighton area for nearly 20 years.

It describes itself as a vibrant learning community providing personalised learning programmes.

A spokesman for the college said: “Our evidence-based approach, Self Managed Learning, has been rigorously tested in a wide variety of contexts for 40 years.

“We offer a supportive, small-scale environment and value each young person equally.

“Outcomes are excellent for students of all abilities and they feel confident about their next steps when they leave us.”
