BAKERS across the city are dusting off their aprons to raise funds for Ukraine.
Two youngsters at Deepdene School in Hove raised hundreds of pounds from their school bake sale.
Harley Angus-Ballard, six, and Emma Steven, seven, were concerned at what they were seeing in Ukraine, and took action.
"I heard about the war from my sister, and I felt sad. I thought ‘I want to help the people',” said Harley.
The pair raised over £350, with proceeds donated to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis appeal.
"I saw the news on the TV,” said Emma. “It upset me because people were losing their homes in Ukraine because of the bombing.”
Keren Rosen, the Year 2 teacher at Deepdene, said: "The girls asked me if they could organise a fundraiser for Ukraine as it was making them feel sad. We decided to do a cake sale.
“I am so proud of them. They used their initiative and kindness, and their ideas helped us raise hundreds for the appeal.”
Another team of volunteer bakers in the city is also holding an emergency sale.
Sussex Bakedown’s “Cakes for Ukraine” event will also donate its funds to the Red Cross appeal, as the group does its bit to help displaced Ukrainians.
A spokeswoman said: "With the enormous human tragedy unfolding in Ukraine as a result of the war, we wanted to do what we could to help raise funds for Disasters Emergency Committee's critically important appeal.
“Sussex Bakedown's volunteer bakers make hundreds of treats for local food banks each week.
“We expect to have a huge selection of cakes and other treats on offer during Wednesday's bake sale. We also hope to meet future volunteer bakers, who are welcome to join our ranks any time."
Sussex Bakedown’s sale will be at FilFil Cafe in Gardner Street, Brighton, on Wednesday, March 16, at 11am.
