DAMAGE to the railway track caused by overnight engineering works has led to train delays and cancellations.

Train services to and from Littlehampton in the direction of Ford, Barnham and Bognor cannot run due to the points failure.

According to Southern Rail, the disruption has been caused by a set of points at Ford that were “damaged” during overnight engineering work.

At 3.47am on Monday, a Southern Rail spokesman said a points failure at Ford was expected to disrupt their West Coastway services, particularly those between Bognor and Littlehampton.

By 4.30am, services were unable to run between Barnham and Littlehampton in either direction.

“Service alterations are possible, with some services terminating and restarting at different stations to normal,” a spokesman said.

Services between Bognor and Littlehampton only ran between Bognor and Barnham only, while services between Portsmouth/Southampton and Littlehampton ran between Portsmouth/Southampton and Bognor instead.

“A set of points at Ford were damaged during overnight engineering work. Work to fix these points is being carried out, but this will take some time,” a spokesman added.

Tickets will be accepted for no extra cost on Stagecoach route 700 between Littlehampton and Chichester.

At 6.37am, the spokesman said: “Trains which usually run between Portsmouth and Littlehampton are running between Portsmouth and Bognor Regis.

“Trains which usually run between Littlehampton and Bognor Regis only, have been suspended.”
