IT WAS refreshing to see Lewes MP Maria Caulfield criticising her government's appalling handling of the current Ukranian refugee situation
last week (The Argus, March 9, Lewes MP Maria Caulfield slams government visa situation).
However, if Ms Caulfield genuinely wants to remove the "obstacles" facing refugees fleeing conflict, perhaps she could reconsider her support for the
government's Nationality and Borders Bill. The provisions of this Bill - currently going through Parliament - include imprisoning or forcibly removing refugees to "offshore processing" facilities simply for arriving in this country with the wrong paperwork.
This Bill was always cruel and unworkable, but I do hope the current situation may have demonstrated to Ms Caulfield and many of her other colleagues that it is time to think again about their support for it.
