HUNDREDS of people could take to the seafront for a fundraising walk to support those in Ukraine.

The Walk For Ukraine event will see people from across Sussex walk the ten-mile distance between Eastbourne Pavilion to the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill on Saturday, March 26.

It will start at 9am and entry is free, but everyone taking part is being asked to raise a minimum of £50 in personal sponsorship.

All the money raised will go to the British Red Cross, which is supporting refugees with emergency shelter, food, water and medical treatment.

Geoff Dixon, who lives in Bexhill and has helped to organise the event, said: “I have a daughter who has two daughters herself, aged seven and five, and I just imagined what it would be like for them to have to suddenly pack up their lives.

“They’d have to leave for a long trek with just a few possessions in a bag and that really hit home.

“We’ve organised this lovely walk along the coast, whereas the people in Ukraine are having to do even longer journeys in sub-zero temperatures at night.

“I just hope the walk will symbolise their journey and make people understand.”

Derek Bulled at CDS Electrical in Eastbourne and Christos Stylianou, from Online Ticket Seller, have also helped to organise and sponsor the event.

It is hoped it will attract between 100 and 250 walkers, but there is capacity for up to 500 people to take part.

More than 2.8 million people have now fled Ukraine because of the Russian invasion, according to the United Nations.

Nearly 89,000 British households have signed up to provide a home for Ukrainian refugees and Foreign Office minister James Cleverly praised the British public for their efforts to support the country.

He said he was “glad the website crashed, because it is a reflection of that generosity of the British people” after households rushed to sign up for the Homes For Ukraine scheme launched on Monday.

All are welcome to join the Walk For Ukraine event and show support.
