A HYBRID SUV had its tyres deflated overnight as part of climate activists’ action against “gas-guzzling luxury cars” to raise awareness about carbon emissions.

The Lexus NX 300h was seen with all of its tyres deflated and a poster stuck on its front window in Wilbury Avenue, Hove this morning.

The car, which has a 2.5-litre petrol engine assisted by an electric motor, produces 161 grams of CO2 per kilometre. Anything below 100g/km can be considered low, or good, CO2 emissions.

The incident comes after a recent spate of tyre-deflating which started from March 8 and has seen several SUV-type cars targeted in the city.

Tyre Extinguishers, who are thought to be a splinter group of Extinction Rebellion, said it wanted to “make it impossible to own an SUV in the UK’s urban areas”.

Sports utility vehicles have been targeted across the UK, with incidents reported in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Sheffield, Liverpool and Edinburgh.

Leaflets left on the SUVs have apologised to car owners for targeting their cars but have said to not take it “personally”.

A leaflet read: “You’ll be angry. But don’t take it personally. It’s not you, it’s your car.

“We did this because driving around urban areas in your massive vehicle has huge consequences for others.

“That’s why we have taken this action. You will have no difficulty getting around without your gas guzzler, with walking, cycling and public transport.”

The government is ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK by 2030 as part of its pledge to decarbonise cars and vans.
