A PROLIFIC bicycle thief has been jailed after he was captured on CCTV stealing cycles near an airport.

Max Huggett was caught on cameras looking at bikes locked in a shed near Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal on January 23.

The 30-year-old was known to be a repeat offender at the airport, with several people who worked there finishing their shift and finding their bike had been stolen.

The owner of the bicycle that is pictured had left it there and returned to find it had been taken.

Security staff at Gatwick were able to find footage of Huggett smoking a cigarette before stealing the bike and riding off on it.

Sussex Police officers from Gatwick’s divisional intelligence unit were able to identify Huggett, formerly of Colman Way in Redhill, Surrey.

Detectives at Gatwick CID then worked to ensure a charge could be brought against him.

At Lewes Crown Court on March 4, Huggett admitted breaching a suspended sentence order, and theft of a pedal cycle.

He was sent to HMP Lewes due to previously being given a suspended sentence for similar thefts at the airport. Huggett has been jailed for a total of 15 months.

PC Michelle Robinson said: “Huggett has been a repeat offender at Gatwick Airport where he has stolen bicycles and property.

“It causes disruption to victims who have worked their shift at the airport and return to find their property has been stolen.

“This case demonstrates that we will work with our partners to identify and catch offenders and stop them causing harm to others.”
