AN award-winning restaurant has received a rating of one in a recent food hygiene inspection.

64 Degrees in Meeting House Lane, Brighton was told to make “major improvements”, following a visit by a food safety officer from Brighton and Hove City Council on February 5.

The food safety officer found that improvements to the hygienic handling of food was necessary, and a “major improvement” was needed to the management of food safety.

But the officer found that the cleanliness and conditions of the building were good.

In a statement, head chef and owner Michael Bremner said: “As part of the food hygiene scoring system, certain documents needed were not available on the day of inspection.

“It had nothing to do with the hygiene of the restaurant and as a result we have requested a revisit to be rescored.”

Businesses which are given low ratings of zero or one must make urgent or major improvements to hygiene standards.

The local authority food safety officer has several enforcement options available, as well as giving advice and guidance to make sure these improvements are made.

The food safety officer will also tell the business how quickly these improvements must be made, and this will depend on the type of issue that needs to be addressed.

Michael, who won BBC2’s Great British Menu in 2017, opened 64 Degrees in The Lanes in October 2013.

Every year since it opened, the restaurant has been awarded a Bib Gourmand by Michelin, an award given to restaurants that offer good quality and good value cooking.

In 2016 and 2017, the venue was named Brighton’s best restaurant and was included in the Good Food Guide 2020.

The guide said: "Tucked in at the end of one of the Lanes, Michael Bremner's original Brighton venue has the kind of unhassled cosiness you expect from a backstreet joint in Lisbon. The small(ish) plates menu divides neatly into plant, marine and meat items, and there's hardly a dish that isn't bursting with clever counterpoints of intensity."

64 Degrees was recently ranked in the top ten per cent of restaurants worldwide, as voted by TripAdvisor users.
