“All lines are blocked between these stations whilst the emergency services work to deal with this incident."

Passengers will need to complete their journeys by using an alternative route at this time, a Southern Rail spokeswoman said.

“All lines between Barnham and Chichester are shut and trains are not running in either direction between these stations,” the spokeswoman added.

“If you are currently on-board a service that has come to a stand in this area, please remain on-board and await further updates from our train crew.

“If you are travelling this afternoon, please allow plenty of extra time to complete your journey.”

Passengers are able to use their tickets at no additional cost on South Western Rail services between Portsmouth, Havant, Clapham Junction and London Waterloo, TfL tube services between London terminals and Thameslink trains between Brighton and central London.

Tickets may also be used on Brighton and Hove busses between Brighton, Hove and Shoreham.

Last week, another person was hit by a train near Eastbourne Station.

The incident took place between Eastbourne and Hampden Park on March 12.

Fire and ambulance crews were present, as well as Sussex Police, with the railway lines closed until the following day.
