POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a “horrific” crash on the A259 which has left a motorcyclist fighting for his life.

A 34-year-old man from Southwick was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs over the specified limit.

After being interviewed he was released under investigation while enquiries continue.

The incident happened just before 8.25am yesterday, March 16, with emergency services called to the crash which involved a blue VW van and a motorcycle at the junction of the A259 Wellington Road and Church Road in Portslade.

The biker, a 25-year-old man, suffered “serious head injuries” and received CPR in the middle of the road by passersby.

Several paramedics, including the air ambulance, were also tasked to the scene, while officers probed the cause of the shocking accident.

The biker was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton by road ambulance.

The A259 was closed in the immediate vicinity for the incident to be attended to.

Detective sergeant Rob Baldwin of the Surrey and Sussex serious collision investigation unit said: "If you were in the area at that time and saw anything of what happened, or if you have any dash camera footage, please contact us via collision.appeal@sussex.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting Operation Hadleigh."
