A CONVOY of fire engines is en route to Ukraine to support firefighters dealing with the humanitarian crisis in the country.

A team from the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service have joined the convoy by the National Fire Chiefs Council and Fire Aid and International Development to deliver fire engines and equipment to their Ukrainian counterparts.

Pictures show 17 fire engines heading off to the Ukrainian border to provide support.

Firefighters in the country have been stretched to the limit as they have sought to put out blazes and rescue civilians from rubble in the aftermath of Russian airstrikes raining down on Ukrainian towns and cities.

In the besieged city of Mariupol, street fighting has been taking place, hampering efforts from rescue workers to help people trapped under the rubble of a theatre shelled by Russian forces on Wednesday.

As many as 300,000 civilians are unable to evacuate the city.
