THERE has been outrage over a group of “out of control” youths throwing concrete slabs, eggs and stones in a high street.

The spate of incidents since Friday, March 18 around Boundary Road in Portslade, has involved a group of children said to be “terrorising” some people.

The youths, who are said to have climbed on to the roof of a set of single-storey shops in Station Road, allegedly threw stones at cars on Friday, March 18.

There were also reports of eggs being thrown at people waiting for their bus on Saturday, March 19.

Meanwhile, one woman was “almost hit” by a slab of concrete shortly after 3pm on Sunday, March 20.

"If that block had hit her it would have killed her or seriously injured her at the very least," one witness said.

Sussex Police confirmed a “number of reports of anti-social behaviour” from Friday onwards, but said there were “fewer reports” since the weekend.

Residents described the problems they have seen.

Kate Pixley said: “This is completely out of control now! All good and well egging cars but throwing lumps of concrete at people that if it hit someone on the head could potential kill them or at best a major head injury.”

Peter Hewett added: “How haven’t they been stopped yet? It’s been a good few weeks now they’ve been trashing up Portslade, Southwick and Shoreham.”

Christine Nabbs said it’s “not the first time this has happened”.

She added: “No doubt a slapped wrist if they get caught and they'll be back there again.”

The children are said to be getting up on the roof by climbing over a wall and down an alley which gives access to the rooftops.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Police have received a number of reports of anti-social behaviour involving a group of youths around the Boundary Road area in Portslade, mostly over the weekend starting Friday, March 18.

“In response, Brighton and Hove officers have been carrying out extra patrols in the area and engaging with staff and security at affected businesses.

“We have seen fewer reports since the weekend as a result, but will continue to maintain a visible presence in the area to deter any future incidents.

“Please report any concerns or crimes to Sussex Police online, via 101 or by calling 999 in an emergency.”
