A TOP comic is bringing his hit show to Brighton and Hove this weekend.
TV Funnyman Nish Kumar, who came to fame while hosting the BBC’s Mash Report, will be performing his politically charged material as part of a new stand-up tour: Your Power, Your Control.
Nish is to play for one night at the Brighton Dome on Saturday, April 2, having last performed at the venue in 2019.
Brighton in general, he says, is a liberating place to tell jokes.
“I’ve been gigging in Brighton for so long because it’s a good place to do comedy, and the Dome is always a highlight of the tour, it’s an amazing room,” he said.
“Brighton is always a show that I look forward to – it’s a very good place to do comedy and specifically a very good place for me to do comedy.
“It’s a city of leftist malcontent – so I do very well there.”
The double Edinburgh Comedy Award winner has been touring his newest show since January, with audiences loving his brazen takes on political and social landscapes.
Since his last outing however, Nish has adapted his style and show, as the second half of his act is “one long story” about a particularly difficult gig of his.
“The last couple of tours I’ve done have been so reactive to things that have been happening in the news, they’ve been changing quite a lot,” said the comic.
“This tour, the second half of the show is really one long story, the story of me getting a bread roll thrown at me – I’ve never really done a show that has been so focused on one incident.”
Nish performed an anti-Brexit routine at the Lord's Taverners' Christmas lunch in 2019, and narrowly missed a bread roll launched by an anonymous heckler.
As well as larger venues, the comedian is playing to smaller crowds at theatres that rarely see top names performers, in areas such as Torquay and Weymouth.
“This is quite boring – but Britain, geographically, is quite a convenient country to be a touring comic in, because every single town has a theatre, so you have this ability to travel between, sometimes for just 45 minutes, between one thousand seat theatres,” said Nish.
“Also, a lot of smaller places are often very grateful that you come to their town, so they’re often really fun and exciting gigs.”
Nish Kumar will be touring Your Power, Your Control until September 2022. Tickets for his date at the Brighton Dome are available via the venue’s website.
