FOOTAGE taken on a Ring doorbell appears to show a Green party volunteer taking a Conservative flyer from a letterbox minutes after it was left.

The Conservatives posted the video on social media accusing a volunteer of approaching the home in Steyning Crescent, Storrington, just minutes after the Tory leaflet was left.

She has been accused of replacing the leaflet with one printed by her own party before hurrying away on Sunday.

It comes ahead of the Horsham District Council by-election, which is being held in Storrington and Washington on Thursday following the resignation of Jim Sanson back in February.

The candidates are Joan Grech (Green), Daniel Hall (Conservative) and Pascal Roberts (Liberal Democrat).

The West Sussex Conservatives posted the clip over the weekend and it garnered some backlash from Twitter users.

A spokesman said: “Shocking footage of the Green Party following our campaigners in Storrington and Washington and stealing our by-election leaflets from residents' letterboxes and replacing it with their own.”

The full video can be seen here.

Chairwoman of the Arundel and South Downs Conservative Association, Cllr Joy Dennis said: “We are extremely shocked by the outrageous behaviour of the Green Party in Storrington and Washington, who have followed our volunteer deliverers and then reached in and removed our election literature from residents’ letterboxes and replaced it with their own.

“This kind of extremist behaviour is unheard of in the beautiful rural areas of Arundel and South Downs and it is a great shame to see these undemocratic actions denying local residents the opportunity to make their own minds up in this local election

“This is a serious election offence which has been taken up with the election returning officer at Horsham District Council who have referred the behaviour to Sussex Police who will be dealing with it going forward.

“In the meantime, we believe the Green Party candidate should withdraw from the election.”

In response, Ms Grech said that the Green Party does not condone the actions of the volunteer, who has apologised.

The Green candidate said: “Firstly I would like to apologise to residents, this is not behaviour that I or the Green Party condone.

“We have spoken to the volunteer involved and she has unreservedly apologised and knows not to do this again.

“This was an over-enthusiastic volunteer who was taking her own initiative.

“Of course, this kind of behaviour is not acceptable.

“I suspect this misguided volunteer was doing their best to protect me from the inaccurate personal slurs contained in the latest Conservative leaflet.

“That said, it’s not an excuse and I apologise to the resident and Daniel Hall the Conservative candidate.”

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "This matter has been reported to us and we are making enquiries to establish what offences may have been committed."
