A 100-year-old bowls enthusiast has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Brenda Templeton was treated to afternoon tea by staff at the Cear Gwent care home in Worthing to mark the special occasion.

She was also visited by her daughter-in-law and long-term friend, who visited from Jersey.

Brenda said she has had a “brilliant and fulfilling life” and was thrilled to have received a card from the Queen.

Sammy Paynter, health and wellbeing co-ordinator at the care home, said: “Brenda is a much-loved member of our Caer Gwent family.

“She is always positive and looks on the bright side, bringing fun and laughter to fellow residents.

“We’re thrilled that we could make her big birthday so special.”

Brenda was born in Shoreham on April 2, 1922, in a maternity home by the beach.

She studied at Queens Boarding School before spending six months in Australia.

During the Second World War, Brenda joined the RAF and worked as secretary to the commanding officer of Squadron 544, based in Benson, Oxfordshire.

It was during the war that she met and married her husband Frank, who was a pilot flying Mosquito aircraft.

Brenda’s biggest hobby was playing and watching lawn bowls, and she would often spend her days at Worthing Pavilion, having a game with her friends.
