THE A27 was blocked for almost three hours after a car hit the central reservation and flipped.

The incident happened eastbound just before 11.10am this morning before the Southwick turn-off, near Portslade.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) and Sussex Police were at the scene of the single-car crash, with the road closed at around 11.45am.

There were severe delays on both sides of the A27 due to the flipped car and a piece of the central reservation sticking into the westbound side of the carriageway.

Pictures showed miles of queues on the westbound side while the road closure remained in place.

ESFRS confirmed that it had left the scene shortly around 12.30pm after “making it safe”.

Diverting traffic caused delays in Southwick and Portslade on the A270 from the Shoreham Bypass. Bus services also saw long delays due to the diversions.

Meanwhile, police remained at the scene while clear-up efforts continued after the single-vehicle crash.

Sussex Police have confirmed there were no serious injuries following the crash.

One lane of the westbound carriageway was reopened at 12.45pm, while the inside lane remained closed due to the central reservation damage.

The eastbound side of the A27 was fully reopened at around 1.50pm.

A Sussex Police spokesman said at the time: “Motorists are advised to avoid the A27 at the Southwick Hill tunnel, after the road was closed in both directions after a vehicle hit the central reservation at around 11am on Tuesday, April 12.

“The road is slowly re-opening in the westbound direction, however the road is still closed in the eastbound direction, with diversions in place.”

An ESFRS service spokeswoman said: “We have made the scene safe and now left the scene of the road traffic collision in the A27/Southwick tunnel.

“Please continue to avoid the area and remember to take extra care when out and about.”

A Sussex Police added: "The occupants of the vehicle were treated at the scene for minor injuries and then taken home by our colleagues from the ambulance service."
