RESIDENTS have until midnight to make sure they are registered to vote for a by-election set to take place next month.

Following the sudden resignation of former Conservative councillor Joe Miller, voters will go to the polls to fill the vacancy in the Rottingdean Coastal ward of Brighton and Hove City Council.

To vote in the by-election, people must be registered and be a British, Commonwealth or EU citizen, be aged 18 or over on polling day, and not be legally excluded from voting.

To be able to vote, residents must register by 11.59pm on April 14.

People who are registered to vote in the ward should have received a poll card in the post, which will tell you where your polling station is, or when your postal voting pack is due to be dispatched.

If voters are unable to get to their polling station on election day, they can apply for a postal or proxy vote.

The deadline for postal vote applications and proxy vote applications is April 19 at 5pm and April 26 at 5pm respectively.

People can register to vote through the Brighton and Hove City Council’s website at brighton-hove.gov.uk/vote.

Voters will choose from six candidates to fill the council ward seat on May 5. They are:

Libby Darling, Green

Lynda Hyde, Conservative

Robert Mcintosh, Labour

Stewart Stone, Liberal Democrats

Stephen Stone, independent

Alison Wright, independent
