NEWLY installed flower displays have been destroyed.

Two of the flower pots were left strewn across the pavement in London Road, Brighton, on Tuesday morning.

Brighton and Hove City Council shared frustration over the incident, but said it did not know how it happened.

“We’re really disappointed that two of the flower planters on the London Road have been damaged,” a council spokesman said.

“We had rented them on a temporary basis with money we were allocated from the national Welcome Back fund.

“It was one of a wide range of initiatives aimed at helping us welcome back visitors as Covid lockdown restrictions ease.

“We are tidying up the damage and removing the fallen planters to make the area safe.

“The planters were due to be returned in the near future. We are currently assessing whether it will be viable to reinstate them, but no decisions have been taken.

“At this stage we don’t know how the damage was caused.”

The public took to social media to speculate on how the displays were destroyed, with most suspecting vandalism.

One Facebook user said: “Drunk British people do this. We are experts at flying St George's flag when the football is on and making our towns s**t holes. And other country’s towns s**t holes when we go on holiday.”

Another said: “You sure that it wasn’t a vehicle that did that? I mean if you’re going to be that sad, then surely you’d do all three. They aren’t light either.”

Another added: “Whoever did this should be named and shamed, and those convicted should do community service cleaning up the city.

“This is going to get worse not better, as people are seemingly going off the rails all over the place.”

A Sussex Police spokesman confirmed they have not received any reports about the incident.
