A VEHICLE has crashed into a railway bridge causing major train disruptions.

The vehicle crashed into the bridge between Oxted and East Grinstead at 12.49pm on Thursday, April 14.

As a result, trains were unable to run between Hurst Green and East Grinstead.

A Southern Rail spokesman said: “We've received reports of a road vehicle striking a bridge between Oxted and East Grinstead.

“In the interest of safety, trains have come to a stand whilst the infrastructure is checked.

“We are recommending that you delay travel until later today. Necessary journeys will take longer to complete and will require an alternative route.”

Passengers are able to use their tickets on Southern and Thameslink services between Three Bridges and London.

“However, please note no alternative transport will be in place from East Grinstead,” the spokesman confirmed.

“We've been given the authority to run our first train over the bridge at a reduced speed.”

By 1.30pm, drivers were given the all-clear following a safety inspection of a bridge.

“Services will resume a normal line speed between Lingfield and East Grinstead,” the spokesman added.

“This has already delayed trains in the area, so please allow extra time to complete your journey.

“You will want to allow an extra 15 minutes for travel to/from East Grinstead today.

“Our Control teams are working to resume the advertised timetable and anticipating disruption until around 2.30pm.”
